Humankind
The condition of the world is a
sobering picture. What can we do about those who are hungry? About
human rights? and existential rights? We ask what can we do about global
warming, and the erosion by humankind of our environment, leaving major
holes in the ecosystems of the planet?
"How do we improve the lives of the
nearly 3 billion individuals living on less than two dollars a day? How can
we enable all individuals—male and female, young and old—to protect
themselves from HIV? To save the lives of more than 500,000 women who die
each year in childbirth? What will it take to show young people living in
poverty that they have a stake in development and a hope for the future?
For perhaps the first time in history, questions such as these are not
simply rhetorical. They have answers: answers that go to the very heart of
what it means to be a woman or a man, wealthy or poor." (from United Nation
Population Fund Site, 2005) We look at global issues because
today local action can and does have global implications in either positive
or negative ways. The failure to act is a devastating decision. Often for
many of us we ask what can we do, either locally or globally.
From the elderly neighbor without heat or running water, to the global issues
posed above. Questions arise.... What is my responsibility? Are
their pathways for action? What is enabling a situation, and what is an act
of kindness and altruistic love?
RustWorks is about providing paths of
action, funding and resources to answer the challenge presented by these
issues.
